- Fly to Bengaluru: You will get an India immigration form and a duty form after leaving the plane, so you need your passport (or passport and visa number) and a pen to fill it.
- Take the (green and only) bus from Bengaluru airport to Railwaystation (SBC), costs around INR250-300, the taxies want INR1200 or more.
- Walk from the bus station to the railway station, platform 8, see here (google maps).
- Take the train to Gadag (SBC to GDG), 16592 / Hampi Express, departure 21:50 from platform 8, near backside entrance of the train station.
train classes
Other options
- There's a direct bus from Bengaluru to Gadag but I only tried it at night.
- Over Hubli:
- Take the train, Janshatabdi Express - 12079, from Bengaluru (SBC) to Hubli (UBL) (leaves early morning), online booking at IRCTC, book class 2S, on the way back it's train number 12080 (IRCTC seems do accept indian credit cars only).
- In Hubli find the main street where the bus stops (this is the difficult part, look here, i think the bus stops near RPF POST HUBLI).
- Take the bus to Gadag - ಗದಗ
- Take a tuktuk (call Malik +91 87470 92831) to Renuka's Castle
- There are flights from Bengaluru to Hubli (map) and back. At the moment with Air Pegasus at around 16:00 so you lose 12 hours waiting on the airport..
- You could fly to Goa (Dabolim Airport, GOI). There's a railway station right next to the airport (about 1km). Then take train and/or bus to Gadag. Book early, tickets seem to be rare. There are also buses to Hubli.
- The new airport building is open since february 2014. I don't recommend to fly to Mumbai because of the unfriendly immigration and customs personnel. Sometimes they question passengers for many hours, probably just out of boredom and to get a little bribe. Take train, bus or plane to Hubli.
- Pune also has an international airport. But the distance to Gadag is about the same as from Bengaluru.
- Fly to any indian airport and rent a bike.
To get an Indian visa for people from Switzerland see here.
Generally the steps are:
- Book a flight to Bengaluru (for example with Omanair or Qatarairways for around CHF1500, there are cheaper flights but they're also less comfortable), print the confirmation or the ticket. This is needed for the visa.
- Follow the instructions at vfsglobal.com, fill the form and make an appointment. (maybe it also directs you to the officialk form found at indianvisaonline.gov.in?)
- Make two 2*2inch (or 5*5cm) passport photos, this can be done at the visa application center (SFR 20.- for 4 photos). The cheapest way to get these photos is creating an image with 2*3 photos and printing them on a 15*10cm photo with a ProntoPhot (places).
- Bring signed printout, passport, two photos, ticket and about SFR150 to the visa application center, Weststrasse 2 in Bern.
- Only drink water from sealed bottles. From other water you can get diarrhea. Bioflorin, charcoal tablets, Florosan or similar products will help.
- Food can contain stones and bones. Be careful when eating, byte slowly.
- Mosquitos can infect you with malaria or other diseases. Use Antibrumm to prevent it, wear long clothes, use a fan when sleeping and completely cover yourself.
- When a seller sees a pinkskin the prices rise at least 200%. So always divide by 4 for a good starting point, don't pay more than one third of the price they say. Some sellers are honest, but you do not find them very often, at least not in tourist areas.
